switching between HTML <-> text composing: tags & special characters

OK, one more, I guess, I told about it: I got a HTML signature with line breaks and special German characters. Everytime a starts to compose an email, I starts with HTML composing. If I now switches to text composing, line breaks are gone and the special characters are encoded in HTML format (& szlig . Switching back to HTML composing, the special characters are back, but the line breaks are lost for ever. Switching in a longer text may result in many work and no undo functionality. Do not need to be the highest prior, but it would be nice, if there could be done some work in direction of improvement.
