Default Deletion of Maildir manually

I had a user on my machine manually delete his Maildir because he thought he was deleting the pine mail directory. I tried re-creating the directory with /usr/bin/maildirmake however he is still unable to receive messages. I then deleted his account and readded him and the same problem persists. I'm not exactly sure how to fix it.

Symptoms are as follows: The inbox folder shows "Inbox (1)" however when clicking this folder, the mailbox never has messages in it. Also in the upper right corner for viewing messages, it says "< Message 1 of 3 >" then icons to move to the next message. Clicking these also does not do anything.

Any ideas on how to restore/change the state of the application so he can read his mail again?

Thank you.

Ryan
