Portable Configuration, Mail Rules and Plugins
« on: April 02, 2007, 01:26:20 AM »
Hi,

I have been using RoundCube and absolutely love it.

A couple of things that are missing are a plugin framework and mail rules.
Mail Rules do pose a bit of a problem but with some tricky workarounds might be workable.
One idea is to have all the configuration (personal settings, addresses, mail rules etc.) stored in the IMAP mail store rather than in the MySQL database. If done in conjunction with Nick Kreegers proposal to add this feature to the Mozilla MailNews framework (Email clients such as Thunderbird and Correo) then we would be able to have a common Address Book and Settings in Thunderbird and Roundcube. We could also store the Mail Rules in the message store with a script that runs on the server that updates the users .procmailrc file from the information in the mail store. This would eliminate the need for Apache to have any access to the users .procmailrc allowing us to configure what rules can and can't be used (eg. Disable moving to /dev/null to stop users accidentally deleting all their incoming mail). If this was stored in the Mail store it could be accessed and modified by any IMAP client.

To find out more about Nick Kreegers proposal go to http://nkreeger.com/misc/proposals.html

To integrate all of this a plugin framework would be useful. I will start looking at integrating a plugin framework and an IMAP based settings store.
