plugins.roundcube.net down, can't send mail
« on: September 25, 2015, 05:24:04 AM »
Hi,

https://plugins.roundcube.net is currently giving a "504 Gateway Time-out" error, and this appears to be preventing Roundcube from sending mail. Running strace on the PHP process shows it blocking on a read from https://plugins.roundcube.net until it times out, and tcpdump shows a connection being established to plugins.roundcube.net the moment I click the Send button. Weirdly, I can't find any reference to plugins.roundcube.net or the corresponding IP address 213.84.134.242 anywhere in the Roundcube installation directory or database, and I don't seem to be able to find anyone else who's experienced this issue either.

It's a little worrying that Roundcube appears to be trying to phone home whenever it sends an email, especially seeing as this behaviour is not obvious from the source code. Even if it's totally legitimate, sending mail shouldn't really be dependant on a remote server being up and reachable. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks,

Mark

Do you have spell checking enabled in your setup? IIRC the "googie" spell option sends the text to spell check to spell.roundcube.net which resolves to the same IP. It used to connect to google but since that service was shut down sometime ago the roundcube team setup a spell checking server people could use instead.

Thanks, that was it. I've switched to pspell as per http://kb.odin.com/en/121977. I really don't like the fact that Roundcube sends your emails to a remote server for spell checking by default.
