connect to SMTP fails after update to 1.4-git

Hi all,
I had a perfectly running installation of Roundcube stable on my test server, and decided to update to the latest 1.4-git.
Now I am no longer able to send emails, with the error "smtp error (-1) connection to server failed"

Could you give me some guidance from where to start to search for the problem? The usual files do not show anything.

After experimenting with confirg, I just put the smtp port in config file and it works.
(in case someone else runs into same issue)
