pasting URL of image causes image to be inserted?

This is an annoying feature which I cannot figure out how to resolve.

I have a URL of an image:

https://dmpublisher.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/old-dm/directionsmag.com/ee/images/newsletter/2007/09_26/figure6.jpg

When I go to compose a new email message and paste the URL in to the email, it automatically inserts the image.

How to make it stop?
