Creating Group from Automatically Collected addresses

I would like to create a group of contacts. I created a personal group, for instance "My Group". It would seem, however, that I can ONLY put "Personal Addresses" into the group. (I cannot drag any "Automatically Created" addresses, and it turns out that the VAST majority of my contacts are in "automatically created".

I CAN, however, EDIT an Automatically Created contact.

1. I know I can manually add personal contacts, but that's tedious & time-consuming.

2. Why can I edit the Automatically Created contacts, but not "use" them in a group? It also appears that I can't "copy" them to my Personal Contacts. Is there a plug-in to populate "Automatically Created" contacts into my Personal Address book?

3. Is there a better way to do what I'm trying to do?
