How to download sent mail to thunderbird on pc

Hi all, I'm hoping I can get a solution to my problem.
Our company uses Thunderbird for our email program and our email provider uses Roundcube.  Downloading incoming is not a problem.  But is there a way to download the outgoing email from Roundcube to Thunderbirds outbox.
Daily email is handled by Thunderbird, but when the guys are on a trip they use Roundcube webmail.  Right now they cc themselves, when they remember, and don't want to empty Roundcubes outbox just in case.  Some are getting pretty full.  Also, the disadvantage to ccing themselves is they have to physically move the message to the outbox once they receive it.  It's an extra step.
I would appreciate any help or a link to where to find the answer.
Thank you.

you should use imap on Thunderbird, not pop3. so you will have exactly the same folder and mails in Thunderbird as in Roundcube.

Dear dziobak,
Thank you for the quick reply!
Is this the only way to download the outbox from Roundcube?
The reason I ask is that from what I read about imap, it has to be physically downloaded to empty the inbox and outbox.  We get a lot of large attachments which requires us to download automatically so we always have room on the server.
If this is a basic question, my apologies.  I'm IT by default, not by training.
With regards,

IMAP only downloads the headers of the email where as POP downloads the whole email so it would be faster to use IMAP.

Dear skaero,
Thank you for the information.
I can see where it would be faster, but the size of our email attachments dictate that we download daily.  Which is why POP3 works for us except for the outbox problem on Roundcube.
If there are other solutions I would be glad to hear of them.
With regards,

Almost every "local client" like MS Outlook and Thunderbird has something thats called local folders. You can move messages to this folders and they will be removed from imap server and imap profile in TB and stored only in local folders in TB.

Dear dziobak,
Thank you  for the information.
I'm going to give imap a try on a dummy email address first.
We have email going back several years, but just started using webmail recently.  I don't want to compromise the existing stuff until I know the new setup works.  Thanks again.
