Search issue or my own ignorence?

Trying to get my new version working smooth..
I am having trouble with the search function or may be just the way it is designed.

If I want to search my inbox based on From.

If I put the full address it works great but if I know just the partial email address or the display name it does not.

Is this the way it was designed?

Is there a writeup on how this works?

The search is performed by the mail server so you would need to look at your mail server documentation to find how it performs the search.
