Does anyone know if one of the current change password plugins work with roundcube on top of hosted 1and1 email?

Do you know the backend e-mail server they are running? As far back as I can remember they do not even have sort capabilities on the e-mail server. That might have changed though.

I believe they use cPanel in which case you can use the password plugin and the cPanel driver.
