Title: MS Outlook 3 Column Theme
Post by: youds on October 08, 2007, 11:33:30 AM
Requirements:
 - Download the latest SVN package (http://trac.roundcube.net/trac.cgi/wiki/Dev_SVN)
 - OR alter RC2 release (as explained in thread - thanks!!)

If there are any known problems with the 3 column layout not mentioned here http://roundcubeforum.net/forum/index.php?topic=1924.0 or then I want to know about them..

Courtesy of http://www.youds.com see below for download.

This theme is designed for those who want to use the 3 column layout and don't mind loosing the "Size" column in the email list (For the purpose of copying exactly how emails appear in Microsoft Outlook)

It allows for easy viewing of emails, replying, and so on and generally cleans up previous attempts.

You will need to include your own logo at this location:
/images/customise/logo.gif

Config requirements:

Files can be downloaded here http://webmail.youds.com/trunk/roundcubemail/skins/default_3column.zip (http://webmail.youds.com/trunk/roundcubemail/skins/default_3column.zip) or see attached

Enjoy!

28/10/07 New icons for different mail types (new, read, replied) and fixes for email-list scrolling, user preferences, customised folders & attachment icon in IE7

30/10/07 Updated the window onload procedure to include a minimum width for the email list, based on the users browser size.

05/05/08 Minor updates. All download locations updated.

06/05/08 Minor updates.

How to enable preview pane in RC2...

Quote from: Gendhor
Ok, for enabling the preview pane I did the following:

1.) I connected to the database with phpMyAdmin.
2.) I selected the table "user".
3.) I edited the field "preferences" for the row carrying the desired user_id.

This field contains some sort of mapping. In this mapping you can read something like

"preview_pane";b:0

4.) I changed the value 0 to 1.

Done.

Yep, it works with all versions from the introduction of "preview_pane", onwards

Planned changes:
 - Import address book from Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express / Windows Mail / Thunderbird
 - Export to CSV format
 - Generally make it less like RoundCube and more like MS Outlook

Other suggestions welcomed..

I ran into some display bugs with firefox (last version).
I'm sorry I can't make a screenshot right now (i'll be back in 10 days) but i have some overlays problems when :
- you have subfolders
- an email have an attached file (the attachment.png picture)

Thanks

RC2 didn't enable preview pane (same as RC1). I've tried suggestions in other threads of how to get it working in RC2 with no luck.

Looks great tho, i'll leave it as my default skin :)

I've followed the steps in the first post but mine looks like this: http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1043/rcdisplayproblemlm4.jpg :'(

Does anyone have any pointers?

EDIT: Just tried it in ie6 and it works perfectly :-[ - Now I wonder why it doesn't work in Firefox 2.0.0.8

Have you pressed CTRL+F5?? It looks like you have a different theme loaded in from your cache.

It's been tested with default settings in IE 7 and FF 1.5 + 2 (yes with the last update) - thanks for the heads up about IE6 though!

Shall look into the sub-folders issue soon, perhaps tommorrow - certainly next week, there is one or two other things that need addressing as well.

What I did to install, was in the roundcube folder you'll have one called templates. In there theres a folder called templates.... Just rename or delete that one and call this template 'default' then you should be sweet!

no no, extract into your skins directory and then modify config/main.inc.php and set the skin_path
look for the entry
$rcmail_config['skin_path'] = 'skins/default/';

and set it to

$rcmail_config['skin_path'] = 'skins/default_3column/';

Looking at the code there it simply just changes the folder name so my instructions would technically work as well :)

I don't know if anyone can help me with this but the middle pane in Roundcube with the latest skin seems to make it make it almost appear closed so that you can't see the name/subject of the email, it is possible though to drag this back out, but is there a way to specify the width in the settings or something.

edit: this is in firefox (using 2.0.0.8) and in opera (using 9.24). It is not happening in IE (using 7)

Hey youds, just updated mine with your latest code and now, in the preferences, folders and identities I'm seeing some extraneous stuff:
'; //var_dump($_POST); ?>

Great work, and just out of curiosity, have you seen this skin with the preview window working in RC2? Just want to make sure before debugging this sucker. :D

Thanks,
Ron

Got preview pane working, my user preferences in the users table had preview_pane set to 0, since the RC2 Preference page doesn't show this preference, there was no way for me to change it, so I did it with a sql update.

I implemented an extra feature in the download link (http://webmail.youds.com/trunk/roundcubemail/skins/default_3column.zip) which resizes the middle pane with JavaScript when it's value is below a certain point (based on the screen size, 1025 and above is 380px min width, below 1025 is 300px).

Hopefully that will fix your problem

Thanks for the update... I gave that a go and it seems it saves the pane width with ie6 but no Firefox 2.0.0.8 as if I drag it out, then logout then back in again it comes at that size I previously had, before going back to the tiny size again about half a second later. However this works fine with ie6 :'(

Hi, lov'n this skin! Is there any way you could make the delete key (and shift-delete) work in the preview pane. As in, if I scroll the preview pane and then hit del, the message doesn't delete. It only works from the mail list pane.

Great skin.

I cannot get it working in RC2. Is the ability to enable preview pane only available in SVN versions?

Anyone who has got this working on RC2 care to share how they got it working?

Lot more to come, I spent most of last weekend working on the actual design of the theme; see attached for a sneak preview (hope you all like it!!)

Most of the work has been done on the Email section only though, I want to make some bigger structural changes to the other pages (too much wasted space on the right, thinking of bringing the folder list into all of those pages so the user can navigate back to the email page for the folder they want to view)

It's not even IE7 compatible yet though, and I haven't even blended the .gif's with the new background colour, so it'll be a while before the next update, a week or two at least. I've done enough for now anyway, just need to get it looking better and add a few features then I'll post the update.  :P

Edit: I'll be making it "language proof" and adding text labels too, so if any one finds that there are problems with foreign languages not fitting and they can't shorten the wording any further then it'd be good to know where I may have problems before I do any major changes. eg. if there is a commonly used word that is short in English but is long in a foreign language, let me know!!!

oww, ahhh, looks very nice  :o

Any chance of putting a trash can next to Junk and Trash on the folder navigator (so that I don't have go to the folder and then click empty)

Also, empty doesn't work from the Inbox, I have a few accounts that get nothing but junk mail (I give it as my junk mail address) and it stinks to have to go through all the email and delete it by hand. I have 1 account that has about 2000 pieces of junk email in the Inbox.

Thanks!!!!

Those "Folder" links (Empty & Contact) have never worked for me, not even with the standard theme, don't know anything about them ???

Will probably just remove them to be honest, wouldn't want someone deleting their entire account by accident ;)

They don't work from the main pane though, wondered what they did!!

Will remove them from the places they don't do anything, pointless having them there.

You do know you can shift and ctrl to select multiple mails for deletion and moving etc?

Try removing all the files from your server (to do with this skin) and re-upload them

I sometimes get problems with FileZilla & ZoneAlarm on the same machine, it scans the transferred files and can cause disruptions.

Usually removing the suspect file and re-uploading it solves the problem.

If this isn't the case do let me know

In response to the IE6 problem, it seems the width is not being set for the mail display area, if this is not the only problem please say.

I am still having some trouble... I have RC2 and while the theme works I just cannot get my preview pane working - I see it in User Preferences and it's set to "on" (I can't change it) and I've made modifications to func.inc and main.inc.php like the RC2 thread suggested.. but it just isn't happening.. Using IE7

Any ideas?  I attached the two files in question just in case I was missing something... I don't think there is anything I can "restart".. I am simply running the PHP code on a hosted site.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I guess I had a similar problem.

Modifications in the user preferences did not seem to work. Therefore, I modified the corresponding preferences for the preview pane directly on the data in the database. There is a flag for the preview pane which initially is set to 0 and must be changed to 1.

youds - Yeah I saw that thread, and I have made those code changes.. still no dice. I attached my main.php.inc and func.inc to my first message.  I also tried deleting all records in the cache table in the database.

Gendhor - Where is this? I looked at all of my records and didn't see anything in any of the tables that looked like the preview pane flag. Can you elaborate?

Once you've solved the problem (have you seen this too? http://roundcubeforum.net/forum/index.php?topic=2280.0#msg9123) please could you descriptively describe the steps taken so that other users can benefit from your experience and I'll edit the first post with your words.
Title: Re: MS Outlook 3 Column Theme
Post by: Gendhor on December 13, 2007, 06:54:32 AM
Ok, for enabling the preview pane I did the following:

1.) I connected to the database with phpMyAdmin.
2.) I selected the table "user".
3.) I edited the field "preferences" for the row carrying the desired user_id.

This field contains some sort of mapping. In this mapping you can read something like

"preview_pane";b:0

4.) I changed the value 0 to 1.

Done.

This is surely not the preferred way in dealing with this but, nevertheless, it worked for me.

Best regards
Gendhor
PS: I'm pretty sure that I read about the solution presented above in this forum, beforehand.

Title: Re: MS Outlook 3 Column Theme

Cool..

That worked great!

Don't suppose there is a way to word wrap the preview, so as not to have to scroll left and right?
Title: Re: MS Outlook 3 Column Theme
Post by: youds on December 14, 2007, 05:09:24 AM
That would be possible but text-only emails are wrapped at 70 characters so if we wrap the preview pane at 60 characters (to prevent the scrollbar), then the line breaks from the email would be at 10 characters into the second line, eg.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt
ut labore et d
olore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi
ut aliquip ex e
a commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum
dolore eu fugia
t nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia
deserunt mollit
anim id est laborum.

etc.

What I can try to do is increase the percentage size of the preview pane to an absolute minimum of 70 characters, but that will just decrease the amount you have to scroll on smaller screens.

The obvious solution would be to switch to the horizontal preview pane in the next update, which would allow for a wider reading area on smaller screens.

Using this theme I have a problem with [cc] and [bcc].

What am I supposed to see, when I click on [cc] for instance when replying to all recipients of a mail that carries some CCs?

I expected to see an input box titled [cc] in which I see all CCs, is that correct?

Rather, using Firefox 2.0.0.11 and roundcube RC2 nothing changes / happens. What am I doing wrong?

The preview pane doesn't look quite right in Safari 3.0 / Mac. I've screwed around with mail.html and mail.css to no avail. Any possible fix? Screenshot attached.

(And it works fine in Firefox / Mac.)

No idea why that could be happening, if the iframe is the right height and the content is loaded into that, then it should display the content at whatever height it desires.

I shall surely take a look for you though.

Ah, I see what you mean - well spotted

Go to skins/default_3column/templates/ and replace "compose.html" with the file that is attached

I'll be sure to remember that this needs fixing in the next update as well.

Hi. Firstly, thanks for your great work; I've been searching for a long time for a decent web client to host.

I have an issue with the mail list in Firefox (and IE7); the date and size columns overlap and clash. Is this a configurable setting change?

Thanks

Yes I had noticed this, it seems to be there when importing from SquirrelMail, or at least that's when I noticed it. The timestamp is different and much longer

I will put overflow hidden on the time filed however as many of you may know IE doesn't support this feature correctly. You wouldn't believe the trouble I had trying to get the subject line to not wrap down into the next email on the list.

I will figure a way rest assured, are new emails coming through like this?

Yes - this affects all emails in all folders, including newly received.

Thanks again

Got the mod working on my server and it works and looks great on IE and Firefox just from the instructions on the first page. Had to make a logo though but no big deal. Now, is there any way to have the preview pane below the inbox list? I know, picky, picky. just checking.

Is it possible to have the reading pane on the bottom?

Horizontal view is planned for the 1.0 release as an optional change when the page has loaded, then this will be remembered for the rest of the session. Unless I see an easy way to store this information in the users account without having to modify the database structure or require permissions be set on the file system.
Also planning to include a patch that will allow users to import addresses from Outlook / Outlook Express / iCal / Thunderbird

This will all be sorted a.s.a.p. - so busy at the moment and it's not ranking well on my list of priorities!!!

Oh and, I've since moved to Mac so I can no test everything through multiple operating systems (useful tool: http://www.vmware.com/download/fusion/) and you'll be pleased to know I found no problems in IE6 (can't login with the standalone version as it doesn't support cookies), Safari or in Firefox for Mac / Linux (Ubuntu).
All good news!!
