the preview pane is not really working in firefox 3. i disabled it, and now it is working. but i loved the preview pane a lot :) see screenshot.

I use FF3 here as well and do not have any such problem. Take a log in your web server's error log to see if there's anything there.
I had this problem too after a FF upgrade.
Eventually I was able to see that the preview pane was taking up all the space in the splitter and was then able to resize it
I think deleting the "mailviewsplitter" cookie from your browser might get things right again.
