I am moving everything to a new provider, I have almost done it but got stuck on a couple of things...
1. I have succesfully copied my roundcube configuration to a new server with the exception of the folders setting which I can't locate - probably going blind! Where is this defined and held and can I copy this easily - I ask because our folder structure is quite complex and will take some time to setup from scratch (and may end up with typos which might cause later problems).
2. I have all my historc mail in thunderbird locally (and still on the "old" server) I can't work out how to "upload" these to my new installation so that I have a complete history.
Any idiot-proof instructions would be great,
thank you........... liz
Well finally done it. It was simple in principle. I am using Thunderbird but the principles must be similar with other mail clients. So, for anyone else wanting to this is what I did:
- Set up "old" account in Thunderbird - pointing at the old server, you will need to use the IP address, rather than the domain name, if you have already moved, ask your old hoster for this.
- Make sure you have retrieved all your mail into this account successfully.
- Set up your new account in Thunderbird - pointing to your new hoster.
- To transfer individual mails from the old account to the new one, such as those in the root folder INBOX, you can drag and drop. When you drag & drop files these are moved unless you actively select copy (hold the CTRL key whilst dropping)..
- To transfer the folders you can drag and drop from the old account to the new one in Thunderbird. When you drag & Drop folders they, and their contents, are copied to the new location. However it doesn't always work and sometimes get's completely stuck! This is what I found:
- it didn't always work if the folder was empty, so I created these folders manually in the new account.
- If a folder has sub-folders sometimes it wouldn't copy, in this case I created the parent and then managed to drag & drop the children.
- Sometimes closing and reopening Thunderbird seems to kick it back into action.
- Occassionaly it all got totally stuck and I had to use task manger to kill off Thunderbird.

Thunderbird helpfully does a two way sync with the server so all my folders appeared in Roundcube as if by magic once I had done all of this.
As a result of doing this I realised that using Thunderbird to manage folder creation and maintenance might be easier than using Roundcube directly. I don't think this would cause any problems, but I haven't tested what happens with renaming.
Anyway, I hope this helps anyone else trying to do the same as me, and although it took some time to work it all out and then do it it was much easier that having to recreate the complex folder structure from new.
