Need a little help with my in box

Being a total noob and having never 'dabled' with php or mysql until a month ago I was pretty amazed that I managed to set up Roundcube on my domain name. 

The send & receiving of emails is working fine but if I log out and go back later - any mails that were in my in box have gone - vanished.  Can anyone give me a steer as to where and how to overcome this please?

It sounds like a problem with the mail server not RoundCube. Do you have another mail client using POP to get messages?

Thank you for such a quick reply. 

I shall now expose more ignorance - I use gmail for my own day to day email and my iMac uses Mail - both of them are using IMAP and not POP to get messages.  But I shall now look further at he mail server for my answer.
