Can't get HTML signature to work?

Hello, i'm new to this forum so sorry if any information is missing or it's misplaced!

I'm just very simply trying to use the HTML signature option. I setup something i like in the preview box and HTML signature is selected but when go to compose an email and send it to myself (testing) it shows up as plain text instead. I only have 1 identity setup and the text from the html signature shows up in the signature but all the html styling is gone when it actually gets used in an email. I don't know what is going wrong. Can someone help me?

under settings -> preferences -> composing messages have you set "Compose HTML messages" to "always"?
