Schema update never finishes

Upgrading from 0.8.1 to 1.0.0, running on Windows. When I get to "3. Test Config", it says the DB schema is not OK, and wants me to run the updater. When I do so, it just hangs; the browser never comes back. Nothing written to the log file (I have logging turned all the way up). No other errors.

Any thoughts on this?
