LDAP read only address book

HI All,
Does anyone know if its possible to set up the following scenario:
i would like to have LDAP set up as the default (read only) address book and have sql as a writable address book for our students.

if that's not possible is it possible to just have a read only LDAP address book

Just read comments/samples for configuration options in defaults.inc.php file that relate to addressbook.
