NO ENTRY icon in starred column

Could someone please explain why some of my inbox messages go grey and have a no entry icon in the star column?  Thanks.

That means that the message was deleted. See the options under Settings -> Server Settings
- Flag the message for deletion instead of delete   
- Do not show deleted messages
