Problem with clearing email search

Hi everyone,  can someone please help me.  I tried hitting the x to clear the searches I made in the email search area but they are still there.  Is there anyway to completely delete it?  I went to the settings but was unsuccessful.  I guess at this point it is frustrating.  I haven't used this program before.  Thanks so much for the assistance:)  Jayne
