How do I make messages display with the newest one being first?

Depends on the skin but...

The sorting order of the messages can be changed by clicking the column in the list header which you'd like the messages being sorted by. Click it once more to reverse the order. The column used for sorting is highlighted in the list header.

If you have Larry in 3 column (widescreen) mode then you must click on the cog/gear icon top left hand corner of the message list and an options screen will appear.
