IMAP connection error - pls assist

I am struggling to get RoundCube configured for a site that is hosted on 1and1

- DB is being hit properly
- I am not using SSL
- SMTP test passes with flying colors
- but... all known-good user login attempts result in the following error:

IMAP connect:  NOT OK(Could not connect to imap.1and1.com at port 143: Connection timed out)

I can telnet successfully from my box to imap.1and1.com: 143

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Well, it looks like your host blocks port 143.

indeed, this was my suspicion, but based on posts i've seen here, it seems that others are successfully using 1and1 as a host and getting roundcube configured accordingly.

can anyone confirm? 1and1 support was less than helpful.
