Can't export contacts in address book

We are trying to export contacts and only the first name in the address book will export.  I've attempted to highlight all the names and then choose to export, but only the first person will export.  I thought it might be an issue with the first contact name on the list, so I deleted that contact and tried again.  Still, only the first name will export.  Can someone please let me know if you there is some secret to this??
