get number of unread messages

is it possible to have something to extract the number of unread messages in the end user inbox, which can be displayed across a whole website? naturally, the user would have to be logged into the webmail system in the first place, but it would be quite a handy feature to have when surfing around a site...

... if this has already been discussed, please feel free to point me to the right direction
