Hey all.

I've been perusing your forums because I've been thinking of installing a mail server on my WHS box. I wanted to do something that would let me take advantage of the fact that it's always on, plus it just seems like a fun project.

I want the whole shebang, which includes a webmail interface. Setting up the mail server seems simple enough (hMailServer seems to be a great all-in-one package for sending and receiving email) but looking for a webmail interface has been less productive. My research has led me to a number of solutions but finding information on installing the solution I'm going for (which is basically putting it on Server 08 R2) has been here-and-there.

So I figure I'll just ask directly: is setting up webmail with Roundcube a smooth process or do you need to be able to give it a good portion of your time to really get up and running (and for that matter, would you even recommend setting up a webmail interface as being something of a hobbyist project or something reserved for a more dedicated and purposed application)? As much as I want to dedicate myself to this project, working during the week unfortunately hasn't left me as much time as I want for side projects. I could probably learn any ups and downs that come with installing this but the real problem is finding the time to do so, which is why I'd prefer the process be understandable. I can understand most technical documentation, the problem is finding stuff out there that is verbose enough to explain what you're actually accomplishing.

Roundcube's installation is very straight forward and there is a simple web installer too. I do not believe you will get lost just by following the web installer.

Upload Roundcube to your webserver
Create a MySQL (if using mysql) database/ user for it. You can even use the web installer to initialize the database. It does not get any simpler. :)

Your hMailserver backed option is painless to manage and it is very stable. We have our demo sites running on hmailserver backend servers and we provide e-mail services for 4 domains. More than 5000 e-mails per day and no performance issues at all. I see no reasons why you will have problems, specially for a small home server setup.

hMailServer documentation can be found right inside the application. Roundcube installation and documentation can be found all over this forum. There is a lot of resources available for those moments when things go south. Give it a try and enjoy. If you would like to hire someone to take on the task of setting this up for you, let me know. I'll be glad to offer you the service for a small fee :)

Thanks everyone. I'm glad you're all so receptive because I know I'm kind of out of place.
