reducing usage %

At the bottom of the email client, it says I have 40% usage. I have deleted and emptied everything out of my folders except for 10 messages in the inbox and it still says I am using 40%!

How do I reduce that??

The messages you deleted may still be on the server and not yet have been purged.

But I have gone to the trash folder and clicked on "Empty" to permanently delete all of the messages and the usage % still has not changed.
