Compose update seems to reset the config

Hi there. Personally, i didnt have used composer at my installations. However, i have writtem some plugins. Today i get an issue in GitHUb from one of the users. He tells that "compose update" have reset its config file config.inc.php. In the case of this plugin, the file config.inc.php isnt part of the package. There is only a file config.inc.php.dist. The user makes manually a copy of this file to config.inc.php and insert afterwards his local changes to config.inc.php. Is there anything i can do from the side of the plugin to prevent such happenings or is this a bug in "compose update"?
