GMail contacts import
« on: May 05, 2013, 04:36:58 AM »
I'm using GMail contacts as my primary contacts database. It synchronises with Google+ and Android very nicely. For now, I just export my contacts there and import them in Roundcube to keep them consistent. But it would of course be easier if a GMail contacts import/synchronisation would be integrated in Roundcube already. Could this be a plugin or something, using Google's app authentication mechanism like other websites do it?

(Oh, and don't forget the pictures, since Google can't export them through their UI...)

There is a Google Contacts plugin http://sourceforge.net/projects/roundcubegoogle/files/ I'm not sure how well it works.

Did anybody try this one yet? It's from 2011 and mentions version numbers like 0.5.2 which sounds like an older roundcube version. The code's got several todo comments but otherwise only sparse commenting. Also, it wants to store my Google account password somewhere in the settings which doesn't look too safe... And it partially supports back-synchronisation. So it's trying to write into my Google contacts which doesn't give me a good feeling considering this code.

How do you synchronise your contacts? Are you all using Roundcube and nothing else? What about your desktop mail apps or smartphone contacts?

I haven't tested the plugin and like I said I'm not sure if it works. Personally I somehow manage not to need an address book where ever I write email so I don't worry about it.

I'm using it with RC 0.92 and works as it says: Read only contacts and quite slow to sync... but it works. I even sync contact images.
