Upgrading from 0.9.5 to 1.0.1

I tried to upgrade from 0.9.5 to 1.0.1 and after untaring the 1.0.1 tarball to a temp folder, executing the install script and specifying the 0.9.5 folder to upgrade, the script seemed to complete fine and the DB upgrade messages indicated success.  When I the logged into roundcube, the mailbox was empty and nothing seemed to function.  I am running on a VM, so I simply rolled back to the snapshot I had taken prior to the install and all was well again. 

Since, I have been reading other articles that discussed needing to place the plugin manager into maintenance mode, but when I go into the manage plugins/settings screen, there is no Maintenance Mode option. See attached screen shot.

Can anyone assist by telling what I need to do to successfully upgrade rooundcube and all plugins from  0.9.5 to 1.0.1?
