I spent quite sometime trying to sort this error out.

I am using courier-imap on Gentoo/Mysql/Lighttpd/Exim and encountered this error when trying to login to a first install of roundcube

  IMAP Error: Authentication for [user] failed (LOGIN): "a001 NO STARTTLS required"

Initially I thought that this meant that TLS is required by roundcube to login, but TLS works on my mail server.

Searching for this error didn't help and eventually I figured that this message actually means that the IMAP server is stating that STARTTLS is required and that roundcube isn't initiating a TLS connection, so the login is rejected.

To fix I changed the courier-imap config to allow non TLS connection by changing:

IMAP_TLS_REQUIRED=0

in /etc/courier-imap/imapd-ssl

As far as error messages go this is pretty ambiguous. "a001 NO STARTTLS required"?? Does this mean "STARTTLS required" or "NO STARTTLS". How about "server requires TLS, but it's not supported"

Perhaps this helps anyone else in the same situation.

Luke.
