Check for new message - doesn't work

I'm having problems with "Check for new message". Clicking this button doesn't do anything. The inbox is only being refreshed if I click on a different folder first, and then go back to the inbox.

Happens with FF 1.5 and Safari unter OS X.4.6

Which also results in the performance to drop drastically.

Is it so hard to program a "check for new mail" button that works w/o caching off ?
Caching off is really no option.

I am confused as to why the default for caching is set to on when it does not function correctly.
