HTML + plaintext

I just had an issue with displaying a message - I wrote the original in HTML and the responder replied in plaintext - upon opening the message the HTML part displayed fine but the response didn't...was fixed if I turned off prefer HTML...but the I don't get the formatting. Any ideas?
