Problem with umlauts in messages

Hallo,
I have some problems with german umlauts in emails, which are sometimes shown correctly and sometimes wierd.
anyone who has an idea where to look to solve this problem?

No idea without the source code of a message which shows up incorrect.

Interesting. The accented capital-A characters that start each incorrect two-character sequence are sure indicators that the text is UTF-8 encoded, but being interpreted as iso-8859-1. The code point of that A character is 0xC3 in iso-8859-1, which in UTF-8 indicates the start of a two-byte sequence. The 1/4 fraction symbol's code point is 0xBC in iso-8859-1. That two-byte sequence (0xC3BC) in UTF-8 translates into Unicode 0xFC. 0xFC is the u-with-umlaut character in both UTF-8 and iso-8859-1.

RoundCube always converts messages into UTF-8 from their native format, and then includes a "charset=UTF-8" meta-tag in the top-level HTML page.

Is your RoundCube page perhaps being shown in a frame that specifies iso-8859-1 encoding in the enclosing page? Is it possible your browser is forcing iso-8859-1 interpretation of the HTML?

No, that was the first thing I checked. No Frames, and the browser is set to UTF-8 (automatically). I don't have any clue where else to look to solve this.

What browser/OS are you using? Can you post (or send me) the HTML source from the RoundCube page when you see the incorrect umlauts?

OS is windows XP or vista .. doesn't matter
Browser is Firefox or IE7

With that same mail message, I am seeing the same behavior. It appears that the message is being "double-encoded" in UTF-8, i.e. the two gibberish characters that show up instead of each umlaut letter are actually encoded in the UTF-8 representation of the gibberish.

I'll do some investigations.

I have the same problem as the person starting this thread - well in my case it is letters with accents and the EURO sign which come out of firefox as small boxes indicating that they are invalid character-codes for the UTF-8 encoding firefox is expecting (and RC is passing in the HTML page).

The mail itself (actually the HTML part in the multipart MIME) is in ISO-8859-1, but I would expect RC to take care of translating that to UTF-8.  Instead it seems it is just outputting the ISO-8859-1 characters as-is, which then makes no sense to firefox (or any other browser for that matter).

Hence, I would like to understand why this thread dried up and whether there is another one I haven't come across yet in my search ...

The problem has been fixed in the trunk baseline, r2810.
