timeout for an idle session

Hi all,
I want to limit life of an idle session,
I've tried to put timeout on appache but it doesnt work
I've also tried to adjust main.inc.php (min_keep_alive and keep_alive)
 but always session are activated

Plz how can I limit life of an idle session,
